Foraging frenzy in the Finnish Forest!

The northern summer is short but bountiful. From May to November there is always something to forage in our forests. Wild herbs, berries and mushrooms are everywhere and best of all, under the Finnish Every Persons Rights we are all free to collect them with just some limitations. Come have a crash course with us on what is there to pick and use right now.

On this trip we take a short tram/bus ride to a close by nature preserve. Depending on the season, we make a survey of what there is to pick. Early and midsummer is great for wild herbs, late summer for berries, end of summer for mushrooms and so on. We identify plants and mushrooms and discuss ways of using them. After a couple of hours of foraging we gather to a fire place and cook a common dish together from what we have found. After this we head back to civilization head full of new ideas and bellies full of... what ever Mother Nature chose to give us!

The trip in a nutshell

  • Experience the Finnish nature up close.

  • Learn about the flora, fauna and fungi of Finland.

  • Forage for edible plants, mushrooms or berries.

  • Cook a meal from what the forest has to offer.

  • Total duration of trip: 3-4 hours.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Minimum of three (3) participants is needed for this trip to be arranged as planned. In the case the minimum is not met and the trip is not arranged, Queertrail will refund all payments to those already booked. Sorry for this, but we can´t do this from our pocket!

How to prepare

  • Wear proper shoes; Hiking shoes are best, running shoes or boots are OK too. Water proof if possible, this is the land of swamps and thousands of lakes!

  • Dress according to weather; Our summers are warm and winters are cold, and then there's everything in between. Mostly wet. And wet means quickly cold. So even in the summer, long sleeves and pants are advised, at least brought along. Some type of headwear is good, it's always good to have as much as possible between you and the sun, rain and mosquitos. Winter is cold, sometimes real cold, wear enough!

  • Open your senses and mind, shut down your phone. Honestly, this is the best thing you can do. Taking pictures is OK of course, but remember that the lens can never experience what your senses can.

  • More detailed instructions will be given according to trip & conditions.
